Nintendo Reveals Price, Release Date and Games for 3DS

DS3

Nintendo of Americas COO and President Reggie Fils-Aime revealed the release date, price, and games for the long-awaited 3DS gaming system at an event in New York this Wednesday.

When Mashable had a chance to play with the new console at the E3 Conference in June and again earlier this month, we were impressed with the devices no-glasses-required 3.5-inch 3D screen and the experience it created.

And that was before we played our favorite games. At the New York event, seven different game publishers showed off new 3DS titles. In addition to the obvious new 3D component, some publishers have also added twists to new 3DS versions of popular games. Ninten! dogs now includes cats. Super Street Fighter 4 has a fight request mode that will allow players to locate other players wirelessly and jump into games. And a new game called Steeldiver has a periscope mode that spins as you do (perhaps on a desk chair?). Dead or Alive Dimensions, Pilotwings, The Legend of Zelda, Kid Icarus, Asphalt, Lego Star Wars and Madden NFL were also among previewed 3D games at the event.

Consumers will have a chance to play these games starting March 27, when 3DS will go on sale for $249.99. The device will initially be available in either aqua blue or cosmo black, and Fils-Aime said that at least 30 games will be released before the E3 Conference in early June.

The price is just about $50 shy of what it costs to buy a 160GB PlayStation 3 and will understandably make some consumers squirm. However, the experience is unlike anything weve seen. The devices 3D feature doesnt create the pop-out effect that 3D movies do, its more like looking into a hole, but it does enhance the animation and effectively pull you into scenes.

Weve included more details about the system and its software in this gallery. Let us know, in the comments, if you think its worth its new price tag.

An activity log that comes with the system tracks both your physical and gaming activity. Logging steps on the pedometer earns you coins that you can spend in games. See, video games are good for you!

An e-shop will make Game Boy titles available, including the 1989 debut version of ! Super Ma rio Land.

Using the augmented reality feature, we fought a virtual dragon that was apparently attacking from this table.

The 3DS has three cameras. One internal-facing camera allows you to photograph yourself, and two others allow you to take 3D photos. Or, using the included software, you could employ all cameras at once to simultaneously take the photo of a friend and yourself in order to see what your faces would look like combined.

"StreetPass" lets 3DS devices communicate and share information without the need to even open up the device, and "SpotPass" helps update the system or connect with other gamers while connected to Wi-Fi.

Similar to the Mii Maker on the Wii, Mii Maker for 3DS helps users create avatars. On 3DS, you can take a photo of yourself to generate an animated character that will show up on other devices in the area.

A sliding switch allows users to adjust how dramatic the 3D effect is or turn it off altogether.
